DULUTH, Minn. – Northern Minnesota will see a quick shift in weather this week, starting with patchy frost overnight before storms return Monday afternoon and linger into Tuesday evening. Daytime highs will climb from the mid-50s Sunday to the mid-70s by Tuesday, a noticeable warmup after a cool start to September.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, showers and thunderstorms will develop Monday afternoon and spread east overnight. A few storms may be strong, bringing gusty winds and heavy rainfall, particularly across the Iron Range and North Shore. Commuters on Highway 53 and travelers along Highway 61 near Grand Marais should prepare for slick roads and possible delays.

Lows will hover in the upper 40s to upper 50s early in the week, keeping overnight conditions mild compared to recent nights. By Wednesday, high pressure will move in, bringing drier, partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-70s, allowing outdoor activities to resume safely.

Residents are advised to keep devices charged in case of power outages and limit unnecessary travel during the strongest storms Monday night.

Storm chances end Tuesday night, with a stretch of calmer, warmer conditions taking hold midweek.
