Duluth, Minnesota – A surge of Canadian air is bringing cooler, drier weather to northern Minnesota, but residents from Duluth to the Iron Range are also dealing with a stubborn blanket of smoke that’s triggered an Air Quality Alert through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the Air Quality Alert covers all of northern Minnesota due to periodic smoke at the surface, with lows dropping to 49-61°F tonight. The smoke is expected to linger on Wednesday and Thursday, especially in areas near the Canadian border, including International Falls, Grand Rapids, and Bemidji.
Drivers and outdoor enthusiasts should limit time outside, especially those with asthma or heart issues. Schools and daycares may consider restricting recess and outdoor activities. Major roadways such as US-53, MN-61, and I-35 could see visibility drop during heavier smoke periods. Residents are advised to keep windows closed, run air purifiers if possible, and avoid strenuous outdoor exercise until air quality improves.
This stretch of smoky air follows several similar events in 2021 and 2023, when Canadian wildfires impacted much of the state. Relief is expected as winds shift later this week, but for now, stay weather aware and check for updated advisories through Wednesday night.
More updates may follow if conditions worsen or the Air Quality Alert is extended.
