Duluth, MN – The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a Gale Watch for western Lake Superior from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon, warning of dangerous marine conditions with gale-force winds and large waves.

Forecasters expect strong southwest winds to build late Saturday night, with gusts reaching 35 to 40 knots by early Sunday. Winds will shift to westerly Sunday night, continuing to produce hazardous conditions through Monday afternoon.

Wave heights are forecast to climb between 8 and 12 feet, particularly near Grand Marais, Outer Island, and Silver Bay, before gradually subsiding by early Tuesday morning.

The Weather Service says conditions will be hazardous to small craft, with potential for rough surf and reduced visibility on the lake. Mariners are urged to avoid open waters during this period and secure vessels in port ahead of the incoming gale.

While winds begin to ease Tuesday, lingering rough conditions are expected into early morning.
