Duluth, Minnesota – Roads across northeast Minnesota could quickly deteriorate tonight as a wintry mix transitions to heavy, wet snow, creating hazardous travel through the Friday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the first storm begins Wednesday evening and intensifies overnight into Thursday, bringing a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Ice accumulations up to 0.25 inches are possible south and east of the heaviest snow band, including parts of northwest Wisconsin, while snow totals of 6 to 10 inches are expected near Duluth, Two Harbors, and Silver Bay.

Snowfall rates could reach up to 0.5 inches per hour during peak periods Thursday, though daytime warmth may limit accumulation on roads at times. Conditions worsen again Thursday night as temperatures drop, allowing slushy roads to refreeze.

A second storm arrives late Friday into Saturday night, with a greater than 50% chance of 6 to 8 inches of additional snowfall across northern Minnesota, including areas near International Falls, Ely, and the Iron Range. Winds gusting 20 to 30 mph could lead to blowing snow, especially near Lake Superior.

Travel along I-35 and Highway 61 may become dangerous at times, particularly overnight and during early morning hours. Residents are urged to limit travel, prepare for changing conditions, and monitor updates as multiple advisories are likely through the weekend.
