Duluth, Minnesota – A winter storm is increasingly likely to impact northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin from Sunday morning through Monday evening, bringing widespread snowfall and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for much of the region as confidence grows in accumulating snow and deteriorating road conditions. Snow is expected to begin as early as 6 a.m. Sunday, continuing through 6 p.m. Monday.

Forecast snowfall totals vary significantly by location. The Duluth area is currently projected to receive 4 to 9 inches of snow, while higher totals are possible across northwest Wisconsin and portions of the South Shore. Communities including Hurley and Saxon could see 12 to more than 20 inches of snow. Farther north, areas such as Ashland, Bayfield, and Iron River are forecast to receive 7 to 15 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.

Across northeast Minnesota, snowfall totals are expected to be lower but still impactful. Cities including Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Ely, and Grand Marais are forecast to receive 3 to 8 inches, while inland areas west of Duluth may see 2 to 6 inches.

The National Weather Service notes that confidence in snowfall amounts remains medium, with ranges still fairly large due to lingering uncertainties in storm track and intensity. Forecasters expect higher-resolution data over the next 24 hours, which may narrow snowfall ranges and refine impact zones.

Snowfall rates may become heavy at times, particularly Sunday night into Monday, potentially leading to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility. Residents and travelers are urged to monitor forecast updates and prepare for changing conditions.
