Flakes are already flying across northern Minnesota this morning as a Winter Storm Warning takes hold from 2 p.m. Tuesday through 9 a.m. Wednesday. Snow is expected to intensify quickly through the day, with 4 to 7 inches of accumulation possible across the Duluth area, including the I-35 corridor. Gusty winds up to 30 mph will reduce visibility and make travel treacherous by afternoon.
The National Weather Service in Duluth warns that the heaviest snow bands will stretch from Cloquet south to Pine City, where totals may exceed 7 inches in spots. Farther north, totals may be lighter, but the combination of heavy snow, blowing gusts, and rapidly falling temperatures will make for dangerous travel throughout the region.
By Wednesday, Arctic air will surge south behind the storm, locking in highs in the teens and single-digit wind chills. Even brief exposure could feel bitter along the North Shore and open areas near Lake Superior.
Drivers should plan for slow commutes, whiteout bursts, and slick roadways — particularly during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning rush hours. Keep emergency kits, blankets, and extra food or water in vehicles in case of delays.
Meteorologists say this system marks the start of an active December 11–17 period for the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest, with more clipper systems expected to reinforce bitter cold into next week.
