Duluth, Minnesota – Gusty winds and light snowfall are expected to impact travel conditions in and around Duluth tonight, with blowing snow likely to reduce visibility on area roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, northwest winds gusting between 30 and 35 mph are forecast this evening, coinciding with periods of light snow across northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. While widespread heavy snowfall is not expected, the combination of wind and fresh snow could lead to localized visibility issues, particularly on open highways and elevated roadways.

Forecasters say additional snowfall through Sunday morning will vary by location. Areas along the Arrowhead and South Shore could see localized accumulations of 3 to 4 inches, while Duluth and surrounding communities are expected to receive lighter totals. Snowfall rates are expected to remain light but persistent at times, allowing blowing snow to become the primary hazard rather than accumulation.

The NWS noted that some communities may still see snow ongoing into early Sunday, with the most notable impacts occurring during the evening and overnight hours. Drivers are urged to use caution, reduce speeds, and allow extra travel time, especially where snow is being blown across road surfaces.

Wind gusts are expected to gradually ease Sunday, though breezy conditions may linger into the morning. Temperatures will remain seasonable for mid-January, allowing untreated roads to remain snow-covered in spots.

The weather pattern is expected to trend drier heading into the new week, but officials recommend monitoring local forecasts for updated snowfall totals and visibility conditions.

This weather may be especially relevant for overnight workers and early-morning commuters traveling along exposed roadways in the Duluth area.
