DULUTH, Minn. – Northern Minnesota will shift from summer warmth to a taste of early fall this week, as scattered showers today give way to much colder air by midweek. Highs Sunday will range from the upper 70s to low 80s, but by Wednesday, daytime temperatures are expected to fall into the low 50s.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a cold front will cross the state late Tuesday, bringing scattered showers and a noticeable drop in temperatures. Lows Wednesday night could dip into the upper 30s, raising the risk of frost in northern counties including St. Louis, Lake, and Cook.

Travelers along Highway 53 and rural roads across the Iron Range may encounter wet conditions Tuesday, while those in farm country are urged to prepare gardens and sensitive vegetation for frost by midweek. Power companies also advise residents to check heating systems ahead of the sudden temperature swing.

The cool stretch is expected to linger into Thursday and Friday, with highs only in the 50s and lows in the 30s and 40s. The Weather Service says additional frost advisories may be needed into Thursday night.
