Duluth, Minnesota – Slippery spots could develop early this morning across northern Minnesota as a light wintry mix moves in, followed by periods of rain and snow that may reduce visibility to under a mile by evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, precipitation began as a mix of freezing rain and snow across far northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin early Wednesday morning, creating a patchy light glaze of ice on roads, especially in areas near International Falls and Ely.

As temperatures rise through the day, precipitation transitions to a rain-snow mix across the Iron Range, including Hibbing and Virginia, while areas farther south such as Duluth and Brainerd see mainly rain. Roads may remain slick in shaded or untreated areas through the morning commute.

By this evening, scattered rain and snow showers redevelop across north-central Minnesota, with brief visibility reductions below one mile possible during heavier bursts. An isolated thunderstorm cannot be ruled out, with small hail or ice pellets possible.

Drivers along Highway 53, U.S. 2, and surrounding rural roads should prepare for changing conditions throughout the day.

Precipitation tapers later tonight, but additional light snow or rain showers may linger into early Thursday as the system exits the region.
