Duluth, Minn. – Northern Minnesota residents bundled up Friday as several cities notched record or near-record cold high temperatures for early September. Duluth tied its 1904 mark at just 52 degrees, while Hibbing fell to 50, setting a new daily record.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, International Falls tied its record of 53 degrees, Brainerd matched its 57-degree high, and Ashland, Wis., dipped to 53, breaking its 1926 record of 56. Meteorologists noted this unusual chill comes as the region transitions into fall under the influence of La Niña conditions.
A La Niña advisory remains in effect with a 54% chance of continuing through early winter. Typically, this weather pattern can bring a milder fall followed by an abrupt onset of winter conditions in November or December. Residents are urged to prepare now for a potentially sharp shift in weather.
Despite the early-season cold, forecasters say temperatures should return to near or above normal next week, though precipitation chances remain uncertain.
