Duluth, MN – Bitterly cold air is set to grip the Northland this week, with the most dangerous temperatures expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth. Forecasters warn that low temperatures may fall to around –15°F, with wind chills plunging to –25°F or even lower in some locations.

The NWS says the coldest conditions will be felt across northeastern Minnesota, including communities such as International Falls, Ely, Grand Marais, Virginia, Hibbing, and Bigfork. Duluth is also expected to see temperatures well below zero, with wind chills reaching levels that can cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.

According to the NWS, the broader region will endure several days of subzero lows as Arctic air settles in. The coldest night is forecast for Wednesday night into early Thursday, when skies clear and winds remain brisk enough to push wind-chill values to dangerous levels.

Cold Weather Advisories may be issued as the event approaches, the agency noted.

Daytime highs will also remain frigid, staying in the single digits and teens for much of northern Minnesota. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure pets and livestock have adequate shelter. Anyone traveling should carry winter survival kits and be prepared for rapidly declining temperatures after sunset.

Forecasters expect the extreme cold to linger into late week before slightly moderating by the weekend.
