Duluth, MN – Dry, windy conditions are expected to develop this afternoon across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, prompting concerns for near-critical fire weather along portions of the I-35 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, relative humidity values are forecast to drop as low as 25% to 35% today, especially during peak afternoon heating. Combined with gusty east and northwest winds between 25 and 30 mph—strongest near Lake Superior—the environment may support rapid fire spread if new ignitions occur.
Meteorologists say fire danger will remain elevated through the weekend as humidity stays low each afternoon. Areas near the Pine Barrens and northwest Wisconsin face the highest concern, though near-critical conditions may also stretch into parts of northeast Minnesota, including Duluth, Two Harbors, Hinckley, International Falls, and surrounding communities.
Wind speeds are expected to ease gradually late Sunday, but forecasters caution that dry fuels and persistent low humidity may keep fire risks elevated into early next week. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents are urged to check local restrictions before conducting any fire-related activities.
Officials also recommend reporting smoke or fire to authorities immediately, as quick response times are critical in windy conditions.
