Duluth, Minnesota – Bitter cold temperatures combined with snow and strong winds are creating hazardous winter conditions across the Duluth area, according to the National Weather Service.

Early Tuesday morning observations at Sky Harbor Airport showed temperatures near 9°F, with wind chills around –9°F. Light winds early will strengthen later today, increasing the risk of dangerous wind chills through midweek.

The National Weather Service reports that snow is likely Tuesday, mainly during the morning hours, with up to 80 percent chances of precipitation. While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, even minor accumulation could create slick roads during the morning commute. High temperatures Tuesday are forecast to reach only 19°F.

Tuesday night will remain bitterly cold, with lows dropping to around 7°F. Northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph, with higher gusts, will drive wind chills well below zero overnight.

On Wednesday, skies will remain mostly cloudy with highs near 11°F. Winds will become blustery, with gusts up to 25 mph, producing wind chill values between –15°F and –25°F at times. Periods of blowing snow may further reduce visibility, especially in exposed areas.

Conditions remain harsh Wednesday night, with lows near –7°F and continued strong winds. Wind chills will again drop into the dangerous subzero range, posing a risk of frostbite for unprotected skin within minutes.

By New Year’s Day, temperatures are expected to remain cold, with highs near 10°F and a 30 percent chance of snow showers. Winds will gradually ease, though cold conditions persist into Thursday night, when lows drop to around 1°F.

Some improvement arrives by Friday, with sunny skies and highs near 14°F, though overnight lows will still fall close to 3°F. Temperatures remain well below seasonal averages through the weekend.

No new winter storm warnings are currently in effect, but the National Weather Service urges residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and use caution while traveling during periods of snow and extreme cold.
