Duluth, Minn. — Weather conditions across Minnesota’s Northland will turn colder and windier today, following lingering light snow showers early this morning. According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, skies will gradually clear as cold air and gusty northwest winds move into the region, setting the stage for a sharp temperature drop tonight.

Wind gusts may reach 25 to 30 miles per hour, particularly along exposed corridors such as Interstate 35, Highway 53, Highway 2, and Highway 61, which could create areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility at times. While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, untreated roads may still become slick, especially during the morning and evening travel periods.

By tonight, temperatures are forecast to fall below zero across much of the Northland, with wind chills making it feel even colder. Motorists traveling late Friday or early Saturday should be prepared for dangerously cold conditions, particularly if experiencing vehicle trouble in rural areas.

Looking ahead, a gradual warming trend begins Saturday, with temperatures climbing back above normal through early next week. Despite the warming pattern, daily chances for light precipitation remain low, though occasional flurries or light snow accumulations cannot be ruled out. Winds will relax somewhat over the weekend, but cold mornings will persist.

Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, limit prolonged outdoor exposure, and ensure pets and livestock are protected from the cold. Drivers should keep emergency supplies in vehicles, especially when traveling longer distances along I-35 and regional highways.

While conditions will improve into early next week, today’s combination of wind, cold, and lingering snow makes travel and outdoor activity more hazardous than usual. Staying weather-aware and planning ahead will help keep Northland communities safe through this cold snap.
