Minnesota wakes to a muted, gray world as fog presses low over roads and neighborhoods. Headlights glow through thick mist, and windshields ice over faster than expected in the cold air.

Across Duluth and much of northeast Minnesota, freezing fog and pockets of freezing drizzle continue this morning. The National Weather Service reports light ice accumulation is likely, especially south and east of Duluth. Even a thin glaze makes untreated roads dangerously slick.

Northwest Wisconsin faces similar trouble. From Sawyer to Price Counties, at least one-hundredth of an inch of ice is expected, with localized glazing possible farther north. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midday, highlighting travel risks during the busiest hours.

Drivers should expect reduced visibility and sudden slick spots. Bridges, hills, and shaded roadways ice first. Morning commutes slow quickly as fog thickens and drizzle freezes on contact. Slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time.

Conditions gradually improve later today as freezing drizzle tapers off. Fog thins in some areas by afternoon, though clouds remain stubborn. To be fair, lingering moisture may still refreeze after sunset.

Another round of fog is possible tonight as temperatures stay mild for January. Moist air trapped near the surface favors reduced visibility again by early Wednesday.

Midweek brings a welcome shift. Sunshine returns in spots Wednesday and Thursday, and temperatures climb into the mid to upper 30s. Melting during the day raises a familiar January concern—flash freezing after dark.

Meteorologists continue tracking additional systems later this week, though impacts look limited for now. Still, winter weather remains active across the Northland as 2026 settles in.
