Duluth, Minnesota – Powerful northwest wind gusts up to 60 mph are expected to impact the North Shore and areas along US-61 through midnight Friday, prompting a High Wind Warning.
Strong west to northwest winds will develop this morning and intensify through the afternoon and evening hours. The strongest gusts are forecast along the Lake Superior shoreline, including Duluth, Two Harbors and Grand Marais. Inland areas, including communities along I-35 and Highway 2, will also experience gusts between 45 and 55 mph.
Travel may become hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles on I-35 and exposed stretches of US-61. Sudden crosswinds could make steering difficult, particularly near elevated terrain and open areas close to the lake. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and keep both hands firmly on the wheel.
The powerful winds may bring down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages. Loose outdoor objects should be secured, including patio furniture, trash bins and temporary structures. Residents are advised to prepare for the possibility of brief interruptions to electricity service.
Wind speeds are expected to remain elevated into the evening before gradually diminishing overnight. However, blustery conditions may continue into early Saturday morning in some areas.
Officials encourage residents across the Duluth region and the Arrowhead to monitor updated forecasts and heed any additional advisories. Those traveling along the North Shore should be especially cautious as the strongest gusts develop later today.
