Duluth, MN – Residents across northern Minnesota are bracing for a widespread freeze tonight, as temperatures are expected to plunge below freezing across much of the Northland. The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a Freeze Warning from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday, signaling the likely end of the growing season for the region.
According to the National Weather Service, nearly all of northern Minnesota will experience subfreezing conditions overnight. Forecast lows range from the mid-20s inland to the lower 30s near Lake Superior. While areas immediately along the lakeshore may be spared from a full freeze, forecasters warn that frost is still likely.
“This will effectively bring the growing season to an end across the Northland,” the weather service said in its Tuesday morning briefing. The alert covers cities including Duluth, Two Harbors, Ely, Hibbing, International Falls, and Ashland, Wisconsin.
Residents are urged to protect sensitive plants and outdoor plumbing before temperatures drop. The coldest readings are expected in inland valleys and low-lying areas where calm winds will allow temperatures to fall quickly overnight.
This early-season freeze marks a sharp transition toward fall’s colder pattern, with additional frost and freeze events possible later this week.
