Duluth, Minnesota – Snow and a wintry mix will begin impacting travel along I-35 and MN-61 by late Tuesday evening, with road conditions deteriorating quickly overnight as a strengthening 996 mb low tracks into the Northland.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the bulk of precipitation arrives Tuesday evening and becomes heaviest late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Snow probabilities exceed 80 to 95 percent for at least 2 inches across Duluth, Two Harbors, Silver Bay and Grand Marais. There is a 60 to 80 percent chance of 6 inches along the North Shore, especially near MN-61 where strong easterly winds could enhance snowfall rates.
Roads along I-35, US-53 and US-2 may turn slushy, then snow-covered before sunrise Wednesday. Farther south toward Hinckley, Spooner and Hayward, precipitation may begin as rain or a mix Tuesday night before transitioning to snow as colder air wraps in behind the system Wednesday night into Thursday.
Visibility could drop below one-half mile during heavier bands, particularly along elevated stretches and near Lake Superior where winds funnel inland. Commuters should plan for slower travel Wednesday morning and consider adjusting schedules if snowfall rates increase overnight.
The system gradually exits Thursday, though light snow may linger into Friday. Storm track shifts north or south will determine final snow totals, and additional advisories or winter headlines may be issued as confidence increases before Tuesday evening.
