Duluth, Minnesota – Heavy snow and 50 mph wind gusts are expected to reduce visibility and disrupt travel across Duluth and the North Shore beginning Tuesday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service in Duluth, a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow will transition to heavy snow late Tuesday, with the most significant impacts forecast overnight into Wednesday morning. Snowfall totals along the North Shore could exceed 8 inches, with some localized areas potentially receiving more than a foot.

Forecasters say strong northerly winds will increase Tuesday afternoon and continue through Wednesday, with peak gusts between 40 and 54 mph along the North Shore. These winds are expected to produce blowing and drifting snow, with visibility dropping below one-half mile at times. Blizzard conditions are possible in exposed areas near Lake Superior.

Road conditions may deteriorate quickly Tuesday night, particularly along Interstate 35, Highway 61, and elevated roadways near the lake. The heavy, wet snow forecast Tuesday and Wednesday — with snow-liquid ratios between 5:1 and 8:1 — may cling to power lines and tree branches. Combined with strong winds, this raises the risk of scattered power outages.

By Thursday, snowfall will taper off, with lighter, more powdery snow lingering into Friday as temperatures shift and snow ratios increase.

Midweek travel could be hazardous for commuters, delivery drivers, and college students returning to campus after evening classes.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and road conditions as the system approaches.
