Duluth, Minnesota – Light snow will spread across the Northland starting Friday and continue through Sunday, with up to 5 inches possible near the Arrowhead and slick travel developing on I-35 and US-61 through Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, most communities in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin will see 2 to 3 inches of accumulation by noon Sunday. Higher totals of 3 to 5 inches are possible in localized pockets near Grand Marais, Grand Portage, and parts of Iron County, Wisconsin. Duluth and Superior are expected to remain closer to 1 to 3 inches.
Snow will fall intermittently through the weekend.
Road conditions may gradually deteriorate, especially along Highway 61 from Duluth to the Canadian border and along US-2 near Ashland and Hurley. The Minnesota Department of Transportation reports that light snowfall rates could still create snow-covered lanes at times, particularly during overnight periods when pavement temperatures drop into the teens and 20s.
Visibility reductions should remain limited, but brief bursts of steadier snow may lower visibility below one mile in heavier pockets near Lake Superior.
Drivers should allow extra travel time and check 511 road reports before heading out.
A brief lull is possible Saturday before additional light snow redevelops Sunday. Temperatures will remain below freezing through the weekend, preventing rapid melting and allowing accumulations to persist on secondary roads.
No Winter Storm Warnings are currently posted, but light snow impacts may last through late Sunday night across the Arrowhead and northwest Wisconsin.
