Duluth, Minnesota — Snowfall developing across northeastern Minnesota today may briefly reduce visibility and slow travel during morning and early afternoon hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, light snow is expected across Duluth and surrounding communities today, with periods of moderate snowfall possible, especially late this morning into early afternoon. Snowfall rates could approach 0.5 inches per hour at times, leading to quick drops in visibility.
Forecast graphics shared early Thursday show 1 to 4 inches of snow possible in the Duluth area by early evening, with additional light accumulation continuing overnight into Friday. Areas along the South Shore of Lake Superior, particularly in Iron County, Wisconsin, could see moderate to locally heavy lake-effect snow through early Saturday, totaling several additional inches.
The National Weather Service also highlighted blustery winds increasing Friday, with wind gusts reaching 25 to 30 mph in parts of the region. These winds may cause patchy blowing snow, especially in open and exposed areas, further impacting visibility.
While snowfall rates are expected to remain mostly light outside of brief heavier bands, slick road conditions are likely during peak travel times. Motorists are advised to slow down and allow extra stopping distance, particularly during periods of reduced visibility.
Snow chances continue into Saturday morning before tapering off, with quieter conditions expected later in the weekend.
This system may be especially relevant for commuters, students, and early-shift workers, as short bursts of heavier snow could coincide with morning travel windows.
