Duluth, Minnesota — Widespread accumulating snow is expected to return to the Duluth area Thursday into Friday, with travel impacts possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Duluth said snow will overspread the Northland beginning Thursday, with several inches of accumulation likely. Probability data shows moderate to high chances for at least 2 inches of snow across the Duluth area, with lower but notable chances for totals exceeding 4 inches, especially in favored snow belts.

Forecasters said the heaviest snowfall is expected Thursday, with snow lingering into Friday. Areas along the South Shore of Lake Superior could see higher amounts due to lake-effect snow, which may continue into the weekend.

In addition to accumulating snow, blustery northwest winds are expected Friday, which could lead to areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility, particularly in open areas and along highways. These conditions may make travel difficult at times, even after snowfall rates decrease.

Snow chances remain elevated through Friday evening, with lake-effect snow showers potentially persisting beyond the main system, especially east of Duluth.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared for changing road conditions, particularly during daytime and overnight travel Thursday and Friday.

This system may be especially relevant for commuters, students, and workers traveling along U.S. Highway 53, Interstate 35, and regional roads during the late-week period.
