Duluth, MN – Snowflakes already swirl across the harbor this morning — the calm before a more intense winter system aims for the Northland. The air is sharp, at 18°F, and the horizon carries that familiar pale gray hinting at more snow to come.

Meteorologists say a new storm system develops Monday, bringing steady snow and increasing winds to Duluth and surrounding areas by afternoon. Accumulations could reach 3 to 6 inches, especially near the lake and higher terrain. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly by the evening commute as visibility drops and wind gusts push 20 to 25 mph.

Before then, Saturday and Sunday bring a rare break — partly sunny skies and highs only near 12°F, with calm northwest breezes. Still, flash freezing is possible where light snow or melted slush refreezes, so caution is advised on bridges and shaded stretches of I-35 and Highway 53.

By Tuesday, the system strengthens — forecasts call for heavy snow bands and blowing conditions, especially near open areas south and west of the city. The National Weather Service warns that lake-enhanced snow could prolong travel issues into Wednesday morning.

5-Day Outlook:

  • Saturday: Partly sunny, high 15°F, low -2°F.
  • Sunday: Sunny, high 12°F, low 0°F.
  • Monday: 50% snow chance, high 20°F, low 13°F.
  • Tuesday: Snow, high 27°F, low 14°F.
  • Wednesday: Snow showers, blustery, high 20°F.
