Minnesota – The crunch of snow underfoot returns to Duluth this morning, with Arctic air sweeping off Lake Superior as a new winter system builds for Friday. After a frigid start in the single digits, snow chances rise sharply Friday as gusty northwest winds drive the region’s next true December blast.

The National Weather Service in Duluth expects snow to begin early Friday, lasting through the afternoon. Up to 2–3 inches could fall locally, with gusts up to 30 mph reducing visibility along I-35 and the Blatnik Bridge. Roads could quickly turn slick as temperatures stay locked near the upper teens, and wind chills plunge to –10°F by evening.

Behind the snow, Saturday brings intense cold and biting winds, keeping highs near 9°F and lows around –11°F. Even brief exposure will feel bitter, especially near the lakefront. Residents should bundle up, limit outdoor time, and prepare vehicles for icy travel if driving north toward Two Harbors or south toward Cloquet.

By Sunday, skies turn partly sunny but remain frigid, with highs barely reaching 7°F. Another weak system may bring light snow late Sunday into Monday, though accumulation looks minimal.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Friday: Snow likely, high 17°F, low –9°F.
  • Saturday: Breezy, cold, high 9°F, low –11°F.
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny, high 7°F, low 0°F.
  • Monday: Partly sunny, high 22°F.
  • Tuesday: Breezy, high 33°F, low 21°F.
