DULUTH, Minn. — Above-normal temperatures are favored beginning early next week across northern Minnesota and the Northland, with the warmer pattern expected to persist through much of the first half of March, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.

In a Wednesday outlook update, the agency said forecast confidence is above average for the early March temperature trend. The outlook indicates the region is more likely than not to see temperatures running above typical values for this time of year.

For context, the Duluth office noted that “normal” temperatures in early March generally run from highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s and lows from the mid-single digits above zero to the mid-teens. The new outlook suggests a greater chance that upcoming daytime highs and overnight lows will trend milder than those benchmarks.

The outlook also points to precipitation. Forecasters said above-normal precipitation is slightly favored during the first half of March. While the update does not specify precipitation type or exact totals, it signals a better-than-normal chance for measurable precipitation events during the period.

For residents, the combination of milder temperatures and a slightly wetter signal can have mixed impacts. Warmer daytime readings may speed melting where snowpack remains, while any new precipitation could influence travel conditions depending on timing and temperature swings. Commuters and outdoor workers may notice more frequent thaw-and-refreeze cycles if overnight lows dip back toward seasonal levels, which can create slick spots on untreated surfaces.

The weather service emphasized that the outlook describes broader trends rather than day-by-day forecasts. Residents planning travel, school schedules, or outdoor activities in early March are encouraged to check updated local forecasts as the period approaches, since the timing of individual systems can still shift even when confidence in the overall pattern is higher.
