Minnesota – A thin, nearly invisible glaze of ice is forming across Duluth this morning, turning untreated roads and sidewalks slick within minutes. Headlights reflect off wet pavement, but the danger hides in plain sight. Even light steps feel unstable, especially on bridges and side streets.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, freezing drizzle is spreading across northeast Minnesota early this morning and will persist through late morning before temperatures rise above freezing. Ice accumulation remains light, but even a thin glaze can create hazardous travel, especially along US-2 and I-35 corridors.
Road crews may struggle to keep up as conditions develop quickly. Side streets, parking lots, and sidewalks pose the greatest risk. Schools and businesses could see delays if surfaces remain slick into midday. Plan extra time and reduce speed if traveling this morning.
Conditions improve slightly by afternoon as temperatures climb toward 41°F, shifting precipitation to plain drizzle. However, another round of wintry mix arrives later today into tonight, especially toward northwest Wisconsin. That could refreeze surfaces again in colder pockets.
Looking ahead, Thursday brings a break with partly sunny skies and highs near 43°F. By Friday, clouds return with cooler air holding temperatures in the mid-40s. The next system arrives Saturday, bringing a mix of rain and snow, with light accumulation possible along and north of US-2 into Saturday night.
Stay alert through the morning hours, as even minor ice can lead to major impacts. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
