Duluth, Minnesota – Smoke will linger over much of northern Minnesota tonight as a Heat Advisory blankets the region and spotty storms threaten travel along the US2 corridor. Temperatures are set to climb well into the upper 80s and lower 90s for many, creating challenging conditions for residents across Duluth, Hibbing, and International Falls.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, skies will stay partly cloudy tonight with lingering smoke, especially near the Borderlands, where a few isolated showers and storms may develop. The agency warns of a heightened risk for heat-related illness as a Heat Advisory remains in effect for much of the Northland through Sunday evening.
Saturday brings partly to mostly sunny conditions, but don’t let the sunshine fool you: scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely north of US2, including Grand Rapids and Ely, with daytime highs surging between 77 and 88 degrees. Sunday could see temperatures reach as high as 92 degrees in spots, with another round of showers and thunderstorms possible, especially in the afternoon.
Travelers are urged to watch for sudden changes in visibility due to smoke and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the heat of the day. Residents should stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbors, and keep devices charged in case of isolated power outages from storms.
The heat and humidity will continue into Monday, with only slight relief as storms shift eastward and drier weather returns to most of the Northland. Additional advisories may be posted as conditions evolve.
