A fast-moving Alberta clipper will sweep across northern Minnesota Thursday afternoon and evening, producing a period of light to moderate snow, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
While overall snowfall totals are expected to remain modest—generally 1 to 2 inches, with 2 to 3 inches possible near Grand Marais—the system may still cause travel difficulties due to its brief window of stronger snowfall rates. Forecasters note that snowfall rates between 0.5 and 0.75 inches per hour are possible in localized bands between 4 PM and 10 PM, especially across the Arrowhead and the MN/Canadian borderlands.
Communities including International Falls, Ely, Grand Marais, Two Harbors, Moose Lake, and Duluth may all see periods of steady snow, with highest totals favored along the North Shore.
Temperatures will remain cold, and light fluffy snow combined with occasional gusty winds could briefly reduce visibility. Roads may become slick quickly, particularly after sunset as temperatures cool further.
The clipper exits the region overnight, with quieter weather expected Friday.
