Duluth, Minn. – Wildfire smoke has pushed air quality across northern Minnesota into the “Unhealthy” range, prompting officials to extend a Red Air Quality Alert until 6 p.m. Monday for cities including Duluth, Bemidji, Brainerd, and Hibbing. Residents in affected areas should prepare for poor outdoor conditions through Monday evening.

According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, wildfire smoke continues to impact the region, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) expected to remain in the Red category through Monday. The alert covers northeast and northwest Minnesota, stretching from International Falls and Ely to Moorhead, Pine City, and Grand Rapids.

Sensitive groups—including children, older adults, and anyone with heart or lung disease—are advised to avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors. The general public should also limit outdoor activity, especially along major roadways such as I-35 through Duluth and U.S. Highway 2 near Bemidji.

Officials recommend closing windows overnight, running air purifiers if available, and minimizing car trips or idling to keep indoor air clean. Outdoor burning and use of residential wood stoves should be avoided until conditions improve.

The Red Air Quality Alert remains in effect until at least 6 p.m. Monday, with more advisories possible if wildfire smoke lingers.
