Jasper, IN – Residents across Dubois County are now under a burn ban effective immediately due to ongoing drought conditions.

According to Tammy Humbert, Director of Dubois County Emergency Management, the ban was enacted at the recommendation of the county’s twelve fire chiefs and approved by the Board of Commissioners. Officials say the unusually dry weather has significantly increased fire risks across the region.

The order prohibits all open burning, including the use of conventional fuels such as wood or other combustible material. Exceptions are being made for grills fueled by charcoal briquettes or propane.

Debris burning, including vegetation, timber, or construction-related waste, is also prohibited. Authorities stress that these restrictions are necessary to reduce the likelihood of wildfires during this period of extreme dryness.

The only permitted exception is for campfires and recreational fires that are continuously attended, enclosed within a non-combustible barrier no larger than 48 inches, and fully extinguished when not in use.

County officials are urging residents to comply with the ban to protect property and public safety. There is no immediate timeline for when the burn ban will be lifted, with conditions to be reassessed as weather patterns change.
