Charleston, SC – A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect this morning for portions of coastal Charleston and Colleton counties, including downtown Charleston, as high tide brings minor saltwater inundation to low-lying areas.
According to the US National Weather Service Charleston, water levels could rise up to a half foot above ground level along shorelines and tidal waterways. Flooding may begin one to two hours before high tide—expected around 8:51 a.m.—and continue briefly after peak levels.
Drivers should avoid traveling through flooded roadways, as some streets may become impassable during the morning high tide cycle. Forecasters caution that even shallow saltwater flooding can cause vehicle damage and create hazardous travel conditions in coastal neighborhoods and downtown areas.
While no significant rainfall is expected today, elevated tides combined with persistent onshore winds are contributing to the minor flooding threat. Conditions are expected to improve by early afternoon as water levels recede.
Residents and commuters in affected areas are urged to use caution, especially in flood-prone zones such as the Charleston Battery and areas near tidal marshes.
