Downers Grove, IL – A Colorado teenager accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint in downtown Downers Grove has pleaded guilty and will serve an indeterminate sentence in the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, according to court officials.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the 17-year-old male, a Venezuelan migrant whose last known address was in Denver, Colorado, appeared before Judge Kishori Tank on Monday. The judge accepted his plea of guilty to one count of armed robbery with a firearm, a Class X felony, and sentenced him to a term not to exceed his twenty-first birthday.

Authorities said the incident took place on April 22 at about 8:37 p.m. when officers responded to the 4900 block of Forest Avenue after reports of an armed robbery. Police say the woman was walking alone when four individuals approached her. The juvenile allegedly displayed a handgun in his waistband, demanding money, while another person pulled at her purse. The group fled after the woman surrendered roughly $110.

Detectives later identified the juvenile as living in Colorado. On May 7, Judge Tank issued an arrest warrant, and the juvenile was extradited to DuPage County after waiving extradition. He has remained in custody at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles since a detention hearing on May 19.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin highlighted the collaborative effort between local law enforcement and prosecutors, stating their commitment to holding offenders allegedly responsible for crimes in DuPage County.
