BANGOR, Maine – A Freeze Warning has been issued for parts of Downeast and interior Maine, where temperatures are expected to drop to around 27°F from Midnight to 8AM EDT Friday. The National Weather Service in Caribou said this will be the first hard freeze of the fall for many coastal and inland areas, ending the growing season for much of the region.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning covers Southern Penobscot, Interior Hancock, Central Washington, and both Coastal Hancock and Coastal Washington Counties, including Bangor, Ellsworth, Machias, Bar Harbor, and Calais. Calm winds and clear skies will allow strong radiational cooling overnight, with widespread frost and subfreezing air settling into valleys and sheltered coastal zones by dawn.
Residents are urged to protect sensitive vegetation and plumbing ahead of the coldest hours. Gardeners should bring in or cover plants, and homeowners are advised to disconnect hoses and insulate exposed pipes. Agricultural experts say this freeze will effectively end the growing season across Downeast Maine, with the coldest readings likely inland from the coast.
Drivers should also be prepared for frosty windshields and slick bridges during early Friday commutes. Sunshine will return later in the morning, helping temperatures climb into the upper 40s to near 50. Another chilly night is likely before a gradual warm-up begins over the weekend.
