Caribou, ME – The US National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a High Surf Advisory for the Downeast Maine coast through 8 p.m. Tuesday, warning of dangerous surf and rip current conditions. A Small Craft Advisory is also in effect for coastal waters extending 25 nautical miles offshore.
Forecasters caution that waves crashing along the shoreline could reach 10 to 12 feet, creating hazardous conditions for beachgoers and boaters. Visitors to Acadia National Park and the Downeast coast are urged to keep their distance from the surf, avoid wet rocks, and never turn their back on the ocean.
According to the Weather Service, a distant coastal storm off the Mid-Atlantic is driving the wave activity northward. Winds will ease slightly by Tuesday night, but seas will remain rough into early Wednesday.
Most of Maine will stay dry early in the week, though rain showers are expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning, possibly mixing with snowflakes across northern areas, including Mount Katahdin, where a light dusting could occur.
Residents and visitors are advised to use caution near the water and monitor updates from local authorities.
