Dover, Delaware – Delaware State Police arrested a Dover man after an alleged carjacking attempt that turned into a fight Sunday evening outside a local grocery store.
According to Delaware State Police, troopers responded around 5:40 p.m. Sunday, March 8, to Redner’s at 88 Salt Creek Drive in Dover for a report of a carjacking.
Police said a 20-year-old man was sitting inside his car in the parking lot when a suspect, described as a Black male wearing dark clothing and a mask, allegedly approached him and asked to use his phone.
Authorities said that while the victim handed the phone to the suspect, the suspect allegedly punched the victim and attempted to prevent him from leaving the vehicle.
When the victim exited the car, police said a physical fight began between the two men. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly took the victim’s phone and vehicle before the victim ran into the store for help.
The victim suffered minor injuries, according to police.
Investigators said a witness followed the suspect in the victim’s vehicle to a residence on New Street in Dover, where troopers soon arrived and took the suspect into custody without incident.
Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Malik Woodall of Dover.
Woodall was taken to Troop 3, where he was charged with:
- Robbery Second Degree (Felony) – Prevent/Overcome Resistance and Take Possession of a Motor Vehicle
- Assault Third Degree
He was later arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and released on $1,000 unsecured bond, according to authorities.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about parking lot safety, particularly for evening shoppers and young drivers leaving local businesses.
