DOUGLAS, Ariz. – A Freeze Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Thursday morning for the Sulphur Springs Valley, Upper Gila River Valley, and portions of eastern Cochise County below 5,000 feet, including the cities of Douglas, Safford, Clifton, and Willcox. The National Weather Service in Tucson warns that temperatures between 30 and 34 degrees are possible overnight, especially in low-lying valleys and drainage areas.
According to the National Weather Service, clear skies, light winds, and dry desert air will allow temperatures to drop sharply after midnight, leading to widespread frost formation. The Sulphur Springs Valley, including rural areas around Douglas and Willcox, is expected to experience the coldest readings by sunrise Thursday.
Residents are urged to cover or bring in sensitive plants, wrap exposed outdoor pipes, and allow faucets to drip slowly to prevent freezing. Pet owners should provide warm shelter for animals, and gardeners are advised to protect citrus, succulents, and other tender crops vulnerable to cold snaps.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, morning frost may cause slippery patches on bridges and overpasses along Highways 80, 191, and U.S. 70, especially near Safford and Douglas. Motorists should drive with caution and clear windshields before heading out for the morning commute.
This will likely be the first freeze of the season for parts of southeast Arizona, signaling a transition to cooler, drier fall weather. Temperatures will warm quickly by midday Thursday and remain mild through the weekend before another cool front early next week.
