Summerville, SC – A Dorchester County deputy is being praised for his bravery after rescuing two women from a sinking vehicle in a retention pond late last month.

According to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call around 12:50 a.m. on November 23, 2025, reporting a vehicle in distress. Corporal White was the first deputy to arrive at the scene, followed shortly by Sergeant Mood.

Deputies found a white sedan partially submerged in the pond, with two women standing on the roof. One of the women told Corporal White she could not swim. He reassured her that he would help, then entered the water to assist.

While guiding her toward the shore, the woman accidentally pulled the deputy underwater, momentarily causing him to lose his ability to breathe. Despite the struggle, Corporal White was able to bring her safely to shore without injury.

In recognition of his courage and quick actions, Sheriff Sam Richardson presented Corporal White with a Life Saving Award, commending his selflessness and dedication to duty.

“This is a true example of bravery under pressure,” the department said in a social media post highlighting the rescue.
