Dorchester County, SC – Deputies in Dorchester County responded to a late-night domestic violence call Monday when a suspect allegedly forced his way into a Windsor Hill Boulevard home and accidentally shot himself, authorities said.

According to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were already patrolling the area shortly after 11 p.m. Monday due to an active domestic violence situation. The complainant contacted dispatch a second time, urgently requesting assistance, prompting deputies to respond directly to the residence in the 8100 block of Windsor Hill Boulevard.

Deputies reported hearing a single gunshot as they arrived. After forcing entry into the home, they found a man who told deputies he had been shot. The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Unit were brought in to assist Uniform Patrol deputies at the scene.

Investigators confirmed the suspect—identified as Lavorieo Jarrod Gathers, 39—allegedly entered the residence with the intent to harm the occupants and accidentally shot himself while attempting to draw a firearm. Deputies also reported that Gathers is federally and state-prohibited from owning or possessing a gun and is currently under federal supervision.

Authorities said Gathers was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Once stabilized, he was placed under arrest and transported to the L.C. Knight Detention Center.

Gathers is charged with Domestic Violence of a High and Aggravated Nature, Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The investigation remains active, the Sheriff’s Office said.
