Dorchester County, SC – Two Summerville parents are in custody after their one-year-old child was found unresponsive and suffering from severe physical injuries at Summerville Medical Center on Tuesday, October 28, according to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said medical staff reported the child had extensive bruising and two brain bleeds. The child was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday evening.
According to the sheriff’s office, investigators identified the parents as Christopher Leon Grimes, 36, and Brittany Marie Hatcher, 29, both of Summerville. Detectives later executed a search warrant at the family’s residence on the 100 block of Glen Street, where both suspects were taken into custody.
Grimes and Hatcher each face one count of unlawful conduct toward a child and two counts of inflicting great bodily injury on a child.
“The depravity and unconscionable cruelty inflicted on this innocent one-year-old child is beyond comprehension,” said Sheriff Sam Richardson. “We are deeply grateful for the medical professionals at Summerville Medical Center and MUSC working to restore this precious child’s health.”
Both suspects remain at the L.C. Knight Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing.
