Green Bay, Wis. – Strong winds and building waves are creating hazardous conditions on Lake Michigan and Green Bay, prompting officials to warn swimmers and boaters to stay cautious through Tuesday evening. Dangerous currents could pull swimmers away from shore, while high waves threaten small craft along the shoreline.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, winds of 10 to 20 knots with gusts up to 30 knots are fueling waves up to 6 feet on Lake Michigan. A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect through Tuesday evening, with dangerous swimming conditions especially near piers and jetties. A Small Craft Advisory also remains in place for Lake Michigan and the bay, urging boaters to avoid travel during the period of rough water.
Counties under the advisory include Door, Kewaunee, and Manitowoc, where rip currents and pounding surf may increase rescue calls. Officials urge swimmers to stay out of the water and boaters to remain in port until conditions ease.
Hazards are expected to diminish by late Tuesday night, but the weather service notes that additional advisories could be issued if winds persist.
