Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck 38 kilometers southeast of Boca de Yuma early Tuesday morning, rattling parts of the southeastern Dominican Republic. The quake occurred at a depth of 168 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface around 5:23 a.m. local time.

According to the Puerto Rico Seismic Network, the tremor was centered offshore and was deep enough that no major damage has been reported so far. However, at least seven people have submitted “Did You Feel It?” responses to the U.S. Geological Survey, indicating light to moderate shaking was felt across parts of the country, including Santo Domingo and La Romana.

The event’s depth significantly reduced its potential for surface damage or tsunami risk. Emergency officials continue to monitor for aftershocks, though none have been recorded as of Tuesday afternoon. No tsunami warnings were issued, and airports and major infrastructure remain operational.

Residents are urged to review earthquake preparedness steps, including securing heavy furniture and identifying safe drop-cover-hold locations inside homes and workplaces. Authorities recommend staying alert to updates in case of aftershocks throughout the week.
