Truckee, CA – As winter storms bring snow to California’s Donner Pass, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Truckee is reminding drivers to prepare their vehicles for mountain conditions. Chain requirements, which began Friday, remain in effect for the season, with all vehicles potentially needing chains under extreme conditions. Levels range from R-1, allowing some vehicles with snow tires to pass, to R-3, which mandates chains for all vehicles.
Drivers should ensure they meet these requirements before hitting the road. CHP recommends checking tire tread, pressure, and carrying snow chains to avoid delays or fines. It’s essential to pack an emergency kit with blankets, water, food, and a flashlight for added safety.
Travelers should also download the “Caltrans QuickMap” app for real-time road updates. To navigate Donner Pass’s steep and icy conditions, drive slowly, maintain extra distance, and avoid hard braking. Even all-wheel-drive vehicles can struggle on ice, so CHP urges a “slow and steady” approach for a safe journey.
Whether you’re local or traveling through, make sure your vehicle meets these requirements before tackling Donner Pass’s challenging winter roads.
