Dodge City, Kansas – Scattered severe thunderstorms could slam central Kansas on Tuesday afternoon and evening, bringing wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail as large as two inches, especially northeast of Dodge City.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms are expected to form along and behind an advancing cold front on Tuesday, June 17. A large section of central and south-central Kansas—including Great Bend, Hutchinson, Salina, and Newton—is at risk for damaging hail and strong winds. The risk of hail larger than 2 inches is highest near the I-135 corridor northeast of Dodge City.
Some storms may also produce brief tornadoes, particularly those that remain south of the cold front. Cities like Russell and McPherson fall within the enhanced risk area for severe weather. Travel along U.S. Routes 50 and 56 may be impacted by low visibility and potential wind damage.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, monitor local alerts, and stay indoors during severe storm warnings. Emergency kits and charged devices are recommended in case of power outages.
Severe thunderstorm warnings may be issued throughout the day. Additional updates are expected early Tuesday afternoon.
