Dodge City, Kansas – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes Thursday afternoon as dry air and gusty winds combine across southwest Kansas, creating near-critical to critical fire conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday for areas along and west of Highway 83, including Garden City, Liberal, and Tribune. South winds will range from 15 to 25 mph with gusts nearing 30 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 10 to 15 percent in the hardest-hit areas.
These conditions significantly increase the risk of rapid fire spread, especially across open fields and grassland areas. Any spark—from vehicles, equipment, or discarded cigarettes—could quickly grow out of control.
Communities along U.S. 83, U.S. 50, and surrounding rural routes should avoid outdoor burning and secure equipment that could create sparks. Fire crews may face difficult containment conditions during peak heating hours.
Residents are urged to report smoke immediately and delay any outdoor burning plans. Fire danger will ease after sunset Thursday, but additional advisories may follow if dry conditions persist.
