Dodge City, Kansas – Bitter cold conditions greeted southwest Kansas early Sunday as temperatures in the teens combined with strong winds to produce single-digit wind chills, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City.

In a social media update posted early Sunday morning, the National Weather Service warned residents to bundle up if heading outdoors, noting that the coldest conditions are concentrated over existing snowpack, mainly west of the Ness City–to–Dodge City–to–Meade line.

Forecast graphics show morning low temperatures ranging from the mid-teens to lower 20s across much of the region, including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, Scott City, and Great Bend. Wind chill values were forecast to drop as low as 0 to 5 degrees in areas west of Dodge City, with 5 to 10 degrees common farther east.

The agency advised residents to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors, especially during the early morning hours. Prolonged exposure to these conditions can increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, particularly for outdoor workers, early commuters, and students waiting for transportation.

The cold air mass is typical for mid-January but is intensified in areas with lingering snow cover, which allows temperatures to drop more efficiently overnight. While conditions are expected to gradually improve later in the day, the early morning period poses the greatest risk.

Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, ensure pets have adequate shelter, and use caution when traveling in the cold, especially if vehicles are slow to start in low temperatures.
