Dangerous winds are expected to impact western and central Kansas on Thursday as an intense surge of north–northwest winds develops behind a passing cold front, according to the National Weather Service office in Dodge City. Forecasters say wind gusts may reach 50 to 60 mph, prompting a High Wind Watch and raising concerns for travel, agricultural operations and infrastructure.

The strongest winds are currently expected Thursday afternoon, though the exact timing and peak locations may shift as the event draws closer. Meteorologists caution that high-profile vehicles will face the greatest risk, especially on open stretches of highways common across the region. Blowing dust could also briefly reduce visibility.

Residents are urged to secure lightweight outdoor items, including trash bins, tools, and holiday decorations, before conditions deteriorate. Fallen tree limbs, downed power lines and flying debris may become hazards as winds intensify.

Drivers should use caution on highways, particularly near grain elevators or large vehicles where sudden crosswinds are common. The Weather Service advises keeping a firm grip on the wheel, maintaining distance from trucks, and using extra caution on bridges and overpasses.

While no precipitation is expected to accompany the wind event, the cold front will usher in noticeably cooler temperatures late Thursday into Friday.

Officials encourage residents to monitor updated forecasts as confidence increases in the precise track and timing of the strongest winds. Any upgrades to warnings or advisories will be issued as needed.
