DODGE CITY, Kan. – An unseasonably warm stretch is setting up across southwest Kansas, with temperatures surging into the mid-to-upper 80s through the weekend and gusty winds returning by Sunday. The National Weather Service in Dodge City said a 40% to 50% chance exists that parts of the region could near 90 degrees Sunday afternoon — nearly 20 degrees above normal for early October.

According to the National Weather Service Dodge City office, highs will climb sharply Thursday through Sunday as strong high pressure anchors over the central Plains. Thursday and Friday will stay mostly sunny with light winds and afternoon highs near 83 to 85 degrees. Saturday brings similar warmth, with breezy southwest winds developing ahead of a stronger Sunday system.

By Sunday, winds may gust 25 to 35 mph, raising localized fire danger and making outdoor activities uncomfortable during peak heating hours. Lows will remain mild, in the 60s, offering little overnight relief. The agency noted that these temperatures fall well above normal, where typical highs hover in the upper 70s.

Residents planning outdoor work or harvest activities should stay hydrated, secure loose objects ahead of the winds, and avoid open burning. No rain is expected until at least early next week, and field conditions will remain dry.
