Dodge City, Kan. – Residents in southwest Kansas should prepare for two nights of unsettled weather as thunderstorms develop late Friday and Saturday nights, with the potential for marginally severe conditions in eastern counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms will begin near Ellis and Trego counties around 10 p.m. Friday before tracking southeast. Most of the activity is expected to remain east of Highway 183, but storms could linger through 2 a.m. Saturday.

Communities including Hays, Great Bend, and Pratt face the highest chances of heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and gusty winds overnight. Drivers on U.S. 183 and surrounding roadways should use caution, especially after midnight.

A second round of storms is likely Saturday night into early Sunday, though the severe threat appears lower. Scattered showers will persist into Sunday morning with only isolated strong storms expected.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, keep devices charged, and monitor NWS alerts in case warnings are issued overnight.

Storm chances diminish by Sunday afternoon, but forecasters caution that additional updates may be needed if storm strength trends upward.
