Dodge City, Kan. – Widespread showers moving across western and central Kansas today could trigger minor flooding in low-lying areas and along roadways, especially south of Highway 96. Travel may be slowed by standing water during heavier downpours.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, rainfall totals are expected to range between a quarter-inch and half an inch, with localized higher amounts where storms track repeatedly. While severe weather is not anticipated, even weak thunderstorms may drop enough rain to cause ponding on already saturated ground.
Communities including Dodge City, Pratt, and Garden City may see brief street flooding during the afternoon and evening. Rural roads and underpasses will be the most vulnerable, and drivers are urged to use caution and avoid driving through standing water.
Emergency officials remind travelers: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Even shallow water can quickly stall a vehicle.
Rain is expected to ease overnight, but additional showers could redevelop into the weekend, prolonging the risk in flood-prone areas.
