Kansas — The cold settles in early, and the air feels sharp across open fields. Pavement stays stiff and gray this morning, setting the stage for a developing winter storm that could linger for much of the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Dodge City has issued a Winter Storm Watch from Friday morning through late Saturday night for south central and southwest Kansas. Snow totals of 3 to 7 inches are possible, with the highest amounts expected in the Red Hills region near the Oklahoma border.

Snow is expected to begin Friday morning and continue in waves through Saturday night. Periods of moderate to locally heavy snow may develop, especially Friday afternoon and evening. That timing raises concern for daytime travel, not just late-night driving.

Cities including Dodge City, Pratt, Greensburg, Meade, Ashland, and Medicine Lodge fall within the watch area. Key routes such as US-50, US-283, and US-160 may become snow-covered quickly during heavier bands. Plan extra time if travel is unavoidable.

Northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph on Friday may reduce visibility at times. Blowing and drifting snow could develop in open areas, especially across rural highways and exposed stretches of road. Even lighter snow could become a problem once winds increase.

Temperatures remain cold enough to support all snow. Limited melting is expected, which increases the risk of slick spots and flash freezing once snowfall rates ease. Conditions may remain hazardous even after snow tapers late Saturday.

Prepare now by checking vehicles, stocking essentials, and adjusting travel plans. Conditions may deteriorate quickly once snow begins.

Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook keeps Kansas colder than normal. Any snow on the ground may linger into next week.
